Do AI Detection Tools Work

AI Limitations

There is no way to guarantee that a text written by an AI will be considered “clean” and not flagged by an AI detection tool. The field of AI detection is constantly evolving, and a piece of content that passes as human-written today might be flagged tomorrow.

The Limitations of AI Detection

AI detection tools work by analyzing text for patterns that are common in machine-generated content, such as:

  • Predictability and Perplexity: AI models often produce text with low “perplexity,” meaning the word choices are highly predictable based on the words that came before them.1 Human writing, in contrast, tends to have more variation and unpredictability.
  • Repetitive Phrasing: AI can sometimes overuse certain words, phrases, or sentence structures.2
  • Lack of “Burstiness”: Human writing often features a mix of long, complex sentences and short, simple ones, a trait known as burstiness.3 AI-generated text can sometimes have a more uniform sentence structure.
  • Generic or Formulaic Content: AI can struggle with nuance, personal voice, and original analysis, leading to content that is technically correct but lacks depth, personal anecdotes, or unique insights.4

The post I provided was created with these factors in mind, aiming for a more natural, human-like flow. However, no AI can definitively guarantee that its output will be immune to detection.5

The Problem of “False Positives” ⚠️

A significant issue with AI detection tools is the high rate of false positives, where they incorrectly flag human-written content as AI-generated. This is especially common in the following situations:

  • When the human writer has a straightforward or less “bursty” writing style.
  • When a non-native English speaker writes in a very clean, grammatically correct way that mimics the structured nature of AI.
  • When the topic is highly technical and requires a very precise, formal vocabulary.

Because of this, many institutions, particularly in academia, advise against relying solely on AI detection software.6 They are often seen as a starting point for a conversation rather than a definitive judgment.

Ultimately, while the post I wrote is designed to sound natural and informative, there is a risk that it could be flagged by some AI detectors. The only way to ensure content is “clean” is for a human to write it from scratch, using their own unique voice, experiences, and thought processes.
