How to Write Better Prompts and Get More From Any AI Tool

Write better prompts

If you’ve tried an AI tool and felt underwhelmed by the results, the problem probably wasn’t the tool. It was the prompt. How you ask an AI a question makes an enormous difference to the quality of what comes back. The good news is that writing better prompts is a skill anyone can learn quickly.

What Is A Prompt?

A prompt is simply what you type into an AI tool. It’s your instruction, question, or request. The AI responds based entirely on what you give it — so the clearer and more specific your prompt, the better and more useful the response.

The Most Common Mistake Beginners Make

Most people start by typing short, vague requests — the same way they’d type into Google. But AI tools aren’t search engines. They respond far better to fuller, more conversational instructions.

Compare these two prompts:

  • “Write me an email”
  • “Write a polite but firm email to a supplier who has missed a delivery deadline for the third time, asking for an explanation and a revised delivery date”

The second prompt will produce something you can actually use. The first will produce something generic that needs significant reworking.

Five Simple Rules For Better Prompts

Be specific. The more context you give, the better the output. Include who it’s for, what tone you want, and what you’re trying to achieve.

Give it a role. Starting your prompt with “Act as an experienced marketing consultant” or “You are a patient teacher explaining this to a complete beginner” dramatically shapes the response.

Specify the format. If you want a bullet point list, say so. If you want three short paragraphs, say that. AI tools will match whatever structure you request.

Iterate rather than start over. If the first response isn’t quite right, don’t start again — just follow up. Type “Make it shorter” or “Make the tone more friendly” or “Add a section about X” and the AI will refine its response.

Ask it to ask you questions. If you’re not sure how to frame a complex request, try: “I need help with X. Before you start, ask me any questions you need to give me the best possible result.” This is surprisingly effective.

A Prompt Worth Trying Right Now

Open any AI tool and type:

“Act as a writing coach. I’m going to paste a paragraph I’ve written and I’d like you to suggest three specific improvements without rewriting it entirely.”

Then paste something you’ve written. You’ll immediately see how a well-structured prompt produces a genuinely useful response.

The Bottom Line

Prompting is not a technical skill — it’s a communication skill. The more clearly you express what you need, the more useful AI becomes. Think of it less like programming a machine and more like briefing a very capable colleague.
